Chinese Hackers Accessed Sensitive Data After Breached Google, U.S. officials say

Posted by Author on May 21, 2013

Chinese hackers who breached Google’s servers several years ago gained access to a sensitive database with years’ worth of information about U.S. surveillance targets, according to current and former government officials.

The breach appears to have been aimed at unearthing the identities of Chinese intelligence operatives in the United States who may have been under surveillance by American law enforcement agencies. Read the rest of this entry »

China’s state-sponsored hackers attack US again

Posted by Author on May 21, 2013

Chinese “state-sponsored” hackers have renewed attacks on the US, after a unit of the Chinese army was named in February as the source of many cyber attacks on US companies, a media report said.

According to BBC, cyber-defence company Mandiant told the New York Times daily that the army’s Unit 61398, believed to operate from a heavily guarded building in Shanghai, has recently stepped up its activity.

China military unit behind many hacking attacks on U.S., cybersecurity firm says

Posted by Author on February 20, 2013

A shadowy unit of China’s vast army, tucked away in a nondescript office building in the thriving business hub of Shanghai, is behind a huge proportion of the hacking attacks on U.S. websites, according to an American cybersecurity firm.

Mandiant released a detailed 60-page report (PDF) Tuesday claiming its “research and observations indicate that the Communist Party of China is tasking the Chinese People’s Liberation Army to commit systematic cyber espionage and data theft against organizations around the world.” Read the rest of this entry »

Clearer Than Ever: Chinese Government’s Link to Cyber Espionage

Posted by Author on February 20, 2013

It has become an article of faith in the information security world that the Chinese government is behind many advanced persistent threats (APTs)—sophisticated, long-term cyber-attacks that target companies for their intellectual property and trade secrets. Expressing the belief is easy, but proving it has been another matter. But one security firm may have the proof. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Author on February 20, 2013

A Virginia-based cyber security firm has released a new report alleging a specific Chinese military unit is likely behind one of the largest cyber espionage and attack campaigns aimed at American infrastructure and corporations.

In the report, released today by Mandiant, China’s Unit 61398 is blamed for stealing “hundreds of terabytes of data from at least 141 organizations” since 2006, including 115 targets in the U.S. Twenty different industrial sectors were targeted in the attacks, Mandiant said, from energy and aerospace to transportation and financial institutions. Drawing lessons from Chinese attacks on US media

Posted by Author on February 8, 2013

Not every media company is as tempting a target for hackers as The New York Times, The Washington Post, or The Wall Street Journal. Not every company can afford high-priced computer security consultants, either. Is there anything that everyday reporters and their editors can learn about protecting themselves, based on the revelatory details the Times and other targets made public last week?

As we wrote at the time, the cyber-attacks on the Times, the Post, and the Journal came as no surprise to foreign reporters working in China or elsewhere who repeatedly face fake emails, custom malware, and hacking attacks on their webmail. But the level of access that the hackers obtained at the Times’ main offices, and the publication of details by their technical advisers, can be instructive. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Chinese still hacking us,’ says Wall Street Journal owner

Posted by Author on February 6, 2013

Several U.S. media outlets experienced a massive wave of cyberattacks allegedly coming from the Chinese military over the last few months. While some newspapers have claimed that their networks are now safe, the Wall Street Journal may still be a victim of the online onslaught.

The newspaper’s owner Rupert Murdock tweeted today, “Chinese still hacking us, or were over weekend.”

The Wall Street Journal confirmed last week that it had been the target of cyberattacks in recent months because of its coverage of China. Apparently, hackers infiltrated the newspaper’s computer system through its Beijing bureau in order to monitor the paper’s coverage of the Far East country. Read the rest of this entry »

Expert: China hacking “reaching an intolerable level”

Posted by Author on February 3, 2013

A STRING of cyber attacks on major US media outlets has intensified worries over Chinese hackers, who analysts say are probably linked to the secretive Beijing government.

The attacks, part of a series of incidents traced to Chinese servers associated with previous intrusions, underscore an urgent need for Washington to pressure Beijing to rein in its digital warriors, experts say.

Other security professionals argue it is hard to be certain the attacks stem from China or that the hackers acted at the behest of the government. Read the rest of this entry »

U.S. considers stronger action against China’s cyberattacks

Posted by Author on February 2, 2013

High-level talks with the Chinese government to address persistent cyberattacks against U.S. companies and government agencies haven’t worked, so officials say the Obama administration is now considering a range of actions.

China-based hackers have long been an economic and national security concern, but as cybersecurity experts report an increase in attacks, U.S. leaders are looking at ways to better address the threat and analyze its impact. Read the rest of this entry »

Chinese Hackers Attacked Washington Post’s Computers

Posted by Author on February 2, 2013

A sophisticated cyberattack targeted The Washington Post in an operation that resembled intrusions against other major American news organizations and that company officials suspect was the work of Chinese hackers, people familiar with the incident said.

Post company officials confirmed the broad outlines of the infiltration, which was discovered in 2011 and first reported by an independent cybersecurity blog on Friday. But they did not elaborate on the circumstances, the duration of the intrusion or its apparent origin. Read the rest of this entry »

Chinese Hackers Attacked NY Times in the Past 4 Months

Posted by Author on February 1, 2013

Chinese hackers have carried out attacks on The New York Times’ computer systems for the past four months, stealing account information and passwords of reporters and others who work at the U.S. paper, it said in a report this week.

The Times said that after “surreptitiously tracking” the hackers for a time, the paper’s computer security experts set up better defenses and then ultimately kicked them out of its networks. Customer accounts with the newspaper were not compromised, it said, citing its security experts. Read the rest of this entry »

McAfee: Cyber attack from China- Hackers infiltrated 72 world organisations including UN

Posted by Author on August 3, 2011

(Guardian) – Dozens of countries, companies and organisations, ranging from the US government to the UN and the Olympic movement, have had their computers systematically hacked over the past five years by one country, according to a report by a leading US internet security company.

The report, by McAfee, did not openly blame any country but hinted strongly that China was the most likely culprit, a view endorsed by analysts.

China has previouslybeen implicated in a range of alleged incidents of cyberspying – a practice Beijing vehemently denies – including a concerted attack on Google and several attempts to prise secrets from computers at the Foreign Office. But the McAfee report is among the most thorough attempts yet to map the scale and range of such data-theft efforts. Read the rest of this entry »

Cyberwarfare to undermine the US- China Fights a War Without Firing a Gun

Posted by Author on May 3, 2011

While experts in the United States are still debating whether cyberwarfare poses a real threat, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has made cyberwarfare a fundamental part of its military strategy—one to win a war against an enemy who is militarily superior.

The Epoch Times interviewed former military and intelligence officials who have watched China’s cyberwarfare strategy, and other technological tactics, in different stages of development. Many of their observations agree with the Communist Party’s own military documents, as presented in threat analysis from the Department of Defense. Read the rest of this entry »
