China Torture Survivors at Risk of Abuse, Death after Escaping from Labor Camp

Posted by chinaview on October 28, 2008

The Falun Dafa Information Center, 26 Sep 2008-

New York (FDIC)—A group of Falun Gong adherents from Liaoning province are at grave risk of torture after being arrested following a daring escape from Masanjia labor camp in August, the Falun Dafa Information Center warned on Friday.

On August 11, adherents assisted Cui Dejun (崔德军), a practitioner detained at Masanjia labor camp, in escaping from the camp’s hospital where he was being held after suffering abuse. According to sources inside China, Cui was then taken to the nearby provincial capital Shenyang and placed at the home of Yu Ming (于溟), a 37-year-old adherent also held at the camp.

Two days later, agents of the Public Security Bureau broke into the house and arrested Cui and others present, taking Cui to an unknown location. In the meantime, guards suspecting that Yu may have aided the escape have also moved him elsewhere, ignoring his scheduled release date of September 2.

Masanjia is known as one of the most brutal forced labor camps in the country where detainees are regularly tortured with electric batons, beaten and raped. These peaceful religious believers should never have been there in the first place,” says Falun Dafa Information Center spokesperson Gail Rachlin.

“That Cui escaped and may have told the world of the horrors taking place in Masanjia has sent the Chinese communist authorities into a panic. Based on the past experience of Ms. Gao Rongrong’s case and the use of incommunicado detention, Cui and Yu’s lives are in grave danger.”

In a widely publicized incident in 2004, Ms. Gao Rongrong escaped from Masanjia and photos of her face disfigured from electric baton shocks spread around the world (news). She was arrested shortly after and according to Amnesty International, died in custody in 2005 (news).

Like Gao, Yu and Cui have both been victims of extreme torture in the past, including being shocked with electric batons on their genitals, being subject to other forms of sexual abuse, and being forced to squat in an iron cage for three months. As recently as June, Cui had fallen unconscious and become incontinent.

Cui and his wife Gao Zhuo were both arrested in July 2007, along with seven of their employees who practiced Falun Gong. All were sentenced without trial to labor camp terms of 1.5 to 2 years. Yu has spent eight of the past nine years in labor camps because he continues to practice Falun Gong.

Family members and bystanders also targeted

In their efforts to catch Cui and retaliate for his escape, the Chinese authorities have also targeted the families of Cui and Yu. According to sources inside China, when agents of the Public Security Bureau broke into Yu’s home on August 13, they badly beat Yu’s nephew, and arrested him along with Yu’s wife Ma Li and his young son, leavingYu’s ten-year-old daughter Yu Zhenzhen at home by herself. They were all reportedly released several days later.

On August 14 and 15, police in the cities of Dalian and Wafandian then arrested Cui’s brother and two sisters-in-law. Cui’s brother and his wife, as well as one of their employees, were detained at the store the couple owns. The women were released shortly after, but the men’s whereabouts remain unknown.

The Falun Dafa Information Center is providing leads and phone numbers related to the case (see below) and urging human rights groups, foreign journalists and other members of the international community to:

* Conduct their own investigation into the case.
* Call Masanjia and Wafangdian officials and demand proof that these individuals are not being tortured.
* Apply pressure on the Chinese authorities to ensure the safety of those arrested and their immediate release.

Most Wicked Labor Camps in China (1) – Liaoning Masanjia

Posted by chinaview on August 21, 2007

Liaoning Masanjia Labor Camp

Address:Liaoning Masanjia Labor Camp

Masanjia Village, Masanjia Town, Yuhong District, Shenyang City
Liaoning Province, northeast China
Post Code: 110145
Tel: 024-89210822, 024-89212252, 024-89210454

Brief about Masanjia

The Masanjia Labor Camp, also called the “Ideology Education School of Liaoning Province,” is located in a suburb of Shenyang City, and is notorious for its heinous crimes against Falun Gong practitioners and known worldwide for its forced-brainwashing techniques.

Over the past four years and seven months, from July 1999 to February 2004, at least 99 practitioners were murdered there because of their belief in the universal principle of “Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance.” Their ages ranged from 27 to 65 and majority of them were only between 31 and 39 years old.

In one incident that was reported by several news agencies, 18 female practitioners were stripped naked and thrown into the cells of male criminals.

The Masanjia Labor Camp is a fascist camp for the purpose of enslaving prisoners to perform labor for profit. Prisoners must work for extended hours under the most appalling conditions.

The main “business” of the women’s section of the Masanjia Labor Camp is textile production. Not only are the detainees not paid, but also their work hours and workloads are pushed to the limit to “boost productivity and profits.”

Falun Gong practitioners from 14 years of age to over 60 have been forced to do intensive labor in the labor camp. They are routinely forced to work 14-16 hours a day, with no days off. Sometimes when there is a big order, they are forced to work for 36 hours nonstop.Falun Gong practitioners live in the most inhumane conditions. There is no bathroom in the camp. They are not allowed to brush their teeth, or to wash, shower, or change their clothes. Even the time for using the toilet is limited. The food given is minimal and is often rotten.

The horrendous conditions and excessive workload damage the health of the practitioners. Many have swollen legs and experience irregular menstruation. Some even develop atrophy of their buttocks due to the extensive hours of being forced to sit still and work.

Due to exhaustion, some have even fainted while working. However, no matter what physical conditions they are in, and no matter what the state of their health, they are not spared from the hard labor.

“On April 12th, 2003 Ms. Zhang’s family received a notice issued jointly by the Masanjia Labor Camp, the local police station and Liujiawopu Village Committee stating that Ms. Zhang “is receiving emergency treatment because she’s critically ill.”

“By the time Ms. Zhang’s family arrived at Masanjia, she was already dead.

“Family members say there were noticeable wounds on her body, including numerous bruises as well as bloodstains in her nose and mouth.

“Labor camp officials refused to allow the family to take any photographs of the body.

“Initially, police and camp officials declined to answer questions about the cause of her death. When Ms. Zhang’s family members demanded to know why her body was black and blue, the police claimed that she had fallen in the shower, triggering a heart problem that led to her death.

“According to a source familiar with Masanjia Labor Camp, prisoners are only allowed to take showers on specific days. April 12th was not a designated “shower day” for those held in the camp, the source says.”

Shocking photo: Chinese Woman’s Breasts Disfigured and Infected from Electric Shock Torture

Posted by chinaview on August 20, 2007

I was shocked today by a photo when I surfering the Internet to gather information about modern labor camps in China.

The photo inside the story- A Woman’s Breasts Disfigured and Infected from Severe Electric Shock Torture in Masanjia Labor Camp- shocked me, even though I knew how brutal the torture is happening in China labor camp, I still can not imagine this kind of inhuman crime can happening in today’s modern world!

Warning: It is recommended that children and those with delicate sensitivities refrain from viewing these photos.

Here’s the excerpt of the story:

“At first, they kept Ms. Wang in isolation. Two collaborators monitored her. She was denied sleep and forced to stand still in the corner of the room. The next day, she had to sit on a chair with her hands tied behind her back to the back of the chair. At night, they had her wear a motorcycle helmet.

“The guards kept chopsticks and a basin of cold water ready to use, and whenever Ms. Wang closed her eyes, they poured water over her and hit the helmet hard with the chopsticks.

“Two guards from Benxi, holding electric batons, shouted, “We will see who is tougher!” The two men tore Ms. Wang’s shirt open and shocked her breasts with two electric batons for 30 minutes.

“Afterwards, they made her stand still for the entire night. The next morning, guard Guo Tieying asked Ms. Wang nastily whom she would follow. Ms. Wang replied, “I will follow the teachings of Falun Gong.”

“Guo Tieying immediately brought in two guards and several collaborators to torture her. They tore a bed sheet into strips and tied her legs in a cross-legged position (with legs double-crossed, as in the ‘full lotus’ position). Next they handcuffed her arms behind her back and tied her upper body to her legs, making Ms. Wang look like a ball. Then they suspended her in the air by the handcuffs, with her hands still behind her back.

“She suffered excruciating pain from this torture for seven hours.

“Afterwards, Ms. Wang could no longer walk with her back straight, but was bent over, nor could she sit straight. Her breasts were disfigured by the intense shocks, and eventually developed serious infections.”

China Modern Torture Methods (13)- “Small Cage”

Posted by chinaview on June 9, 2007

Falun Gong Human Rights Working Group-

Evidence has surfaced of over 100 torture methods being employed against Falun Gong practitioners in China’s labour camps, detention centers, and mental hospitals.

Torture Methods (13) – “Small Cage”Small Cage

Small cages are 1.5 meters in height, 1.3 meters in length, and less than a meter in width.

Victims are usually handcuffed to the cage in such a way that they can neither stand up nor sit down, but must just hold themselves in an awkward, crouched position. Sleep is not allowed.

After a few days, the victim’s legs will become swollen. In severe cases, necrosis can hap-pen to feet, ankles and legs.

The small cage is usually placed outdoors, thus exposing the victim to bitter cold in the winter, scorching sun in summer, as well as in-sect bites. Victims of small cage torture often have difficulty walking even after a long recovery period.

Cases

1. Ma Wenrui, male, Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province;
Yan Jiguo, male, Yilan County, Heilongjiang Province

Mr. Ma Wenrui and Mr. Yan Jiguo were locked in small cages by guards at the Changlinzi Labor Camp because they refused to renounce Falun Gong. They were not released even to use the toilet.

2. Jia Naizhi, female, 40

Ms. Jia Naizhi was held and tortured in a “small cage” for 19 days at the Masanjia Labor Camp. As a result, her ankles became severely swollen, and she could not bend her legs. She had to crawl on the floor in order to defecate. Her arms were handcuffed at the highest position for six days until she began running a high fever. Even so, she was not released from the handcuffs. They were only lowered slightly. Her request for water and a blanket was rejected. In-stead the guards shocked her with electric batons.

3. Lin Xiuru, female, resident of Heilongjiang Province

Ms. Lin Xiuru was locked in a “small cage” for more than 10 days at the Wanjia Labor Camp. This cage, so called “Imprisonment in Hell,” has a width of 0.6 meters, length of 1.3 meters and height of 1.5 meters. The guards locked her up in the small cage for more than 10 days.

Photo: China Modern Torture Methods (2)- Electric Shock

Posted by chinaview on December 27, 2006

Falun Dafa Information Center -

Evidence has surfaced of over 100 torture methods being employed against Falun Gong practitioners in China’s labour camps, detention centers, and mental hospitals.

Torture Methods (2) – Electric shock

Electric shockElectric batons are among the most commonly used torture instruments employed by police officers and jail guards in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners.

(Picture left: illustration: Electric shock )

They use electric batons that carry voltages as high as 300,000 volts to shock practitioners’ sensitive areas, including the mouth, center of the palms, center of the bottom of the feet, genitals, chest, neck, and breasts. Sometimes they use several electric batons simultaneously to shock practitioners.

The labour camp authorities often pour water on the practitioners to intensify the electric shocks. Some police also use a homemade electric shocking device; it resembles a masonry brick in size and shape, and it carries a much higher voltage than regular electric batons.

The skin will break open and bleed in every place that receives a shock from this device.

Cases

1. Ms. Gao Rongrong, 36, tortured with electric batons for 7 consecutive hours on face by Labour Camp officials.

Victim: Ms. Gao Rongrong, accountant at the Luxun Fine Arts College in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, northeaset China

In July 2003, Gao Rongrong was sent tothe Longshan Forced Labour Camp (Shenyang City) because she made peaceful appeals to the government to end the persecution of Falun Gong. During her detention, Ms. Gao had been beaten by camp officials, according to sources familiar with her case.

(Photo upper left: Gao Rongrong’s face after shocked by electric batons. Photo upper right: Ms. Gao Rongrong )

“At approximately 3:00 p.m. on May 7, 2004, Tang Yubao, the deputy head of the No. 2 Brigade, along with team leader Jiang Zhaohua, called Ms. Gao to the duty office and tortured her with electric batons for seven hours, according to these sources.

“Those detained with Ms. Gao in the labour camp say she sustained burns on her face, head, and neck, which caused her face to swell and become disfigured.

“Her face was covered with blisters, and her hair was matted with pus and blood. She could open her eyes only a crack because her face and mouth were severely swollen and deformed.” ( full report of this torture case)

3. Prof. Zhang Kunlun, an Canadian citizen ‘s experienceprof. Zhang Kunlun

“My name is Kunlun Zhang. I am a Canadian citizen and a professor of art. Because I practice Falun Gong, I was arrested three times while staying in China to take care of my elderly mother-in-law.

On November 14, 2000, I was sentenced without trial by the Chinese authorities to three years in (Shandong province ) labour camp because I refused to denounce Falun Gong. With the help of the Canadian government, Amnesty International, and the international community, I was released on January 10, 2001.

“During my detention, policemen beat me to the floor and shocked me all over my body with high-voltage electric batons. They threatened that if I uttered a sound, they would shock my mouth.

The head of the police station said to me, “We have orders from Jiang Zemin. As long as you refuse to denounce Falun Gong, we can do whatever we want to you. If you were beaten to death, we could simply bury you and tell the outside world that you had committed suicide.”

My arms, legs, and other areas were burnt in many places from the intense electric shocks. I could even smell my own burning flesh. The beatings and electric shocks injured my left leg badly. It took three months for the wounds to heal.” ( Statement by Mr. Kunlun Zhang)
