The wife of a Chinese diplomat working out of the Ottawa embassy has defected, CTV News has learned.
Jiyan Zhang is expected to speak about her ordeal on Parliament Hill Friday at a rally supporting those who quit the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Sources have told CTV News that the envoy’s wife is a Falun Gong practitioner and critic of the CCP.
After suspecting that Chinese officials were planning to send her back to China, she defected earlier this month and claimed refugee status.
The Chinese embassy is remaining coy on the subject and won’t comment on her husband.
Reports also say the couple has a son in Canada in his 20s who does not live with his parents.
The rally is being heralded as a show of support for “the over 20 million people in China who have withdrawn from the Communist party and its related organizations.”
Falun Gong is a discipline banned by China’s communist government and many practitioners claim they have been tortured because of their beliefs.
The press release, issued by Quitting CCP Center (Canada) calls the Chinese government a blood-thirsty regime.
“As Chinese-Canadians, we have worried for years about China and the lives of our 1.3 billion people under control of this blood-thirsty regime. Now the Chinese are saying “No” to the tyrannical Chinese Communist regime,” says the release.

Such actions take a great amount of courage. I hope this path works well for her.

I hope her courage is rewarded with sustained freedom — and then using the chance to speak-out and be of-service to the thousands left in China, each bearing the brunt of the genocide happening there to followers of the Falun Gong religion.
All we have in this life is our good name – honor and courage help us keep it.
Find your courage and speak out about this genocide. Learn more on this blog like I did. Don’t contribute to this great eveil by your silence.
Best to all,
Em

Good for her. It takes a lot of personal courage to speak out much less actually resign from a country or ideology. Quitting a large political party with as many resources as the Chinese Communist Party have is a major personal political move, and nothing to be taken lightly. Great congratulations to her for her courage.

I applaud the efforts of all Chinese Canadians and residents, and landed immigrants or those simply working in Canada to take these necessary steps to show the rest of Canada just exactly what Chinese Nationalism and the CCP are. My many Chinese friends are completely blinded by their government and have been brainwashed for many years. Torture of the Tibetan monks and nuns, destruction of over 6,000 monasteries, and torture and killing of Falun Gong and regular Chinese men and women–without trial, simply dragged and shot in the head (see Amnesty International reports) are abhorrent to all people. The Chinese embassy is nothing more than a front for the Chinese CCP, this is why the embassy spends so much time proclaiming that it is a compassionate, loving country.
