Falun Gong Human Rights Working Group

Evidence has surfaced of over 100 torture methods being employed against Falun Gong practitioners in China’s labour camps, detention centers, and mental hospitals.

Torture Methods (11) – “Tiger Bench” China Torture 11- tiger bench

During this torture, police tie the victim’s legs tightly to the tiger bench using belts. They then put bricks or some other hard objects under the victim’s feet. They keep adding layers of bricks until the belts break. Victims endure unbearable pain and often pass out during these torture sessions.

Other tortures are often used on the victim at the same time, including shocking the victim with electric batons, cuffing the hands behind the back, burning the body with cigarettes, inserting wood slivers under the fingernails, stabbing the ribs with a sharp pen, hitting the cheekbones with a screwdriver, slapping the face, pricking thumbtacks into the face, and even reining the mouth with a rope (oftentimes the victim cannot close his mouth since the two corners of the mouth have been torn.)

Cases

1. Woman tortured to death

Ms. Wang Shouhui, resident of Changchun City, Jilin Province, Northeast China

” On April 11, 2002, Ms. Wang (Shouhui) was walking down the street when she was again abducted by the police from Zhengyang Police Station of Luuyuan District. She was blindfolded by the police from the First Division of the Changchun Public Security Bureau and was taken to a secret torture room in Jingyueshan, Changchun. She was tortured on the tiger bench for two days and one night, during which time she was also beaten with two electric batons on the breasts.

Three men used their fists to punch her face, chest, and back. As a result, Ms. Wang’s left cheekbone was fractured and she vomited a great amount of blood. Later, her lungs were infected.

While at the police hospital, Ms. Wang’s four limbs were confined when she received infusions. She was prohibited from using the restroom. Instead, the hospital forcefully inserted a tube into her bladder, but did not give her care. She could not move for five days and five nights. Subsequently, her bladder was permanently damaged and she could no longer control her bladder.” – from lawyer Gao Zhisheng’s 3rd open letter to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Chairman Hu Jintao on December 12, 2005 in Changchun City

” At 4:20 p.m. on October 28, 2005, Ms. Wang Shouhui (mother) and Mr. Liu Boyang (son) from Changchun City were followed by 6-10 Office staff and were illegally arrested. The two were brutally tortured by the police. At about 8 p.m., 28-year-old Liu Boyang died from the torture. About 10 days later, his mother was also tortured to death.” – from lawyer Gao Zhisheng’s 3rd open letter to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Chairman Hu Jintao on December 12, 2005 in Changchun City

2. Li Yanming, female, resident of Changchun City, Jilin Province, Northeast Chinatiger bench

On January 25, 2002, Ms. Li Yanming was taken away from her home by the police from Changchun City. The next day, several policemen took Ms. Li to a remote building where they tortured her for two days and two nights.

(Photo: demonstration: Tiger bench torture)

They forced her to sit on the “tiger bench,” on which she was forced to sit straight up with her eyes looking straight ahead. Her hands were placed on her knees, and she was not allowed to turn her head, close her eyes, talk to anyone or raise her hand. She was severely beaten whenever she moved a little bit on the bench.

The severe beating left her arms paralyzed and she could not even eat anything for a few days.

3. 63-Year-Old man Tortured to Death on the “Tiger Bench”

Li Xuechun, male, 63, a retired worker at the Macheng City Light Industry Bureau, resident of Macheng City, Hubei Province

Because Mr. Li Xuechun went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting the practitioners of Falun Gong, he was arrested and severely beaten to the point that he could not walk for a long time.

In the Gulou Police Substation, Macheng City, Hubei Province, Mr. Li was tied to a “tiger bench.” Six groups of police personnel took turns to interrogate and beat him. During this process, Mr. Li was not given any food and was not allowed to sleep. He was detained and tortured for three months.

In late December 2000, Mr. Li died from the repeated torture sessions. He left a letter with his son, describing his torture. However, the government confiscated the letter. The government officials threatened Mr. Li’s son with arrest if he ever talked about his father’s death.

Horrible human rights abuses. Still the Olympics are held, all is glitter and awe. China has a strong economy and that’s all that matters, they are a trade partner. CNN is controlled by the “powers that be” IE: The world’s richest families and corporations. Power that can assasinate a president and bring two towers down. CNN and FOX news are instructed not to report this, by the rich Jews who own the media.

Wow i never knew that things like this still go on in this world today. I thought all of this torture methods like this was done and over with back in WWII! Are they trying to make us have a repeat in history? I’m not trying to say anything of the sort but that what i feel like, i feel like something like that is going to happen again without us noticing till the last second, and by then it’s already to late.

And Unknown i’m just going to leave that last comment alone.

And to you David Taylor it is not right to inculde what your views are about religion onto another’s comment; some people may believe in your God while others dont. And it’s not right to compare man to animals. Animals are not evil vile beasts like ourselves; they just do what nataure intended them to do, by theory surive and reproduce; not torture who you think is in the way, or seen as a threat, if it was animal they kill it not torture it to the point where they wish they were died instend! I am of Japanese background and i’ve heard all the stories about us ‘Japs’ doing horrible things to the people that they caputer, rape, and kill. Not only have the older genaration have done this but other countries as well, they are just not as finely document as the Japanese.

When i showed my boyfriend this; who is of Chinese background he was really really really scared and said that he too didnt know that something like this is still happening.

I dont know know if the genral public is seeing this with untained or tained eyes; it doesnt take a 4 year old to know that something about this picture is wrong here, Is our president so blinded by money and greed that he cannot see that something like this is happening not too far for a war that doesnt need to be so bloody? This is not only happening in China but in other parts of the world, if i had the money i would go right to the door steps and do all that i can to help those in need, though i may be young at least my heart is in the right place, unlike most people now a days. People being blinded by their own personal greed and hatred, that is where it starts my friends. Keep your friends close, but keep your enemy closer, that is the motto that is needed right now; and so far we are doing a pretty good job at it! note the sarcasim.

First off, after I read how the Tiger Bench torture method was carried out, I couldn’t even bear to read the rest of it. I felt the need to jump straight to the comments for a more PG version of it. This is absolutely horrible. I’m a Chinese-American and I’m completely disgusted by what sadistic actions the Chinese government undertakes so as to maintain “order”. Certainly, we don’t have the perfect society but at the very least it’s more humane than what’s going on over there. Why is Bush so concerned with finding weapons of mass destruction and liberation in the Middle-East when there is such a pressing issue of extreme torture (these aren’t the only cases, a mere tip of the iceberg) going on over in China. China is truly becoming a world power in a few years, there’ll be no way to stand up to its sadistic methods. Many nations such as the United States, Great Britain, and France all claim to be humanitarians and that they are concerned with the quality of life for all human beings. I think it’s fair for me to say that all these civil rights loving nations and the United Nations should rally together to put an end to such an atrocity. There is no reason for delay. All we see are news reports of the ongoing sadism occurring yet no one will take action. I feel that many news reporters and news networks are not exempt from this either (not taking action). It seems that when people report the news, they report in a manner that is not completely representative of us and working to generate as much publicity as possible regardless of how insignificant the situation or how dire, all just to raise their reputation. If I were somehow capable of doing something I would really like to. I’m not talking about just marching against something like this, because really, how affective will that be half-way around the world? Let’s be honest, after all. The Chinese government does not care what the people of however many nations think of them so long as no action is taken by those peoples’ nations.

Secondly, to David Taylor, please don’t include your religious beliefs as a means to retort to another’s comment. I respect your faith but please respect others’ lack of. Also, I don’t think it’s fair that you would compare to the human race to animals – it’s unfair to the animals to be portrayed as sadistic beasts. Animals don’t know what torture is and that’ because animals go straight for the kill. They base themselves on instincts, they don’t torture their prey. Humans are the ones that came up with torture, for whatever reason. You can’t exactly say that such behavior is not the norm either. Think about it, we’ve all been guilty of acts of torture, whether it be like the tiger bench or poorly tipping the waiter as payback for giving you an attitude. They’re both forms of torture, the difference is in the degree of severity. Once again, don’t retort with something religious such as “in Christianity, we are taught to forgive and love thy neighbor and if attacked to turn the other cheek”. If you must retort, please give me something thought out not regurgitated.

This is indescribable. I can’t even THINK of such torture. All I can say is that they DO need a punishment but not such as this.

  12. David Taylor said

    Xan:
I believe you are wrong. Though I agree that there are many people who will hurt others, surely that is not the norm. To say that anyone is capable of committing these things is clearly incorrect. Most would never even think of treating fellow humans in such a way. That is why we distinquish between humans and mere animals. These hardline communists, members of 610 and others who would participate in these atrocities surely do not deserve the right to walk upon this earth with the rest of us. Jesus came to this earth to teach us the difference, to teach us to love one another as we do ourselves (and even more). He was sent by God as a message that we do not have to accept this “low life” behavior. Mass murder is what the CCP is guilty of here–not being just like anyone else.

  13. Xan said

Anyone is capable of commiting these things. There are plenty of people who will hurt others.

If you read a bit about this persecution you’ll figure out why they have done it. So much has been written on this. Falun Gong was phenomenally popular in China, the communists saw it as a challenge to their ideological control, Jiang (leader of the CCP at the time) became jealous and hateful of Falun Gong influence, and that so many CCP members were practicing, and a 10 000 person appeal to the Party to release imprisoned practitioners lead to the persecution. In the history of the CCP this is just another political movement, though latest, worst, most ridiculous and disgusting.

    Hello Kathryn:

    Any efforts would be appreciated.

One of the events you can consider to take part in is Human Rights Torch Relay (http://www.humanrightstorch.org/), which aims to pressure Chinese regime and appeal to the International society to work together to stop the brutality before 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Human Rights Torch was lit on August 9, 2007 in Athens and will be relayed through over 35 countries in more than 150 cities around the world until August next year 2008.

So it’s almost sure will go to the city you are living now in U.S.

    Just a reference for you.

Thanks a lot for your comments.

  18. I am stunned to find this site. I ran into it on my hitlinks checking out who was visiting my site. Having experienced a considerable amount of torture I have not spoken specifically about, I am sickened by this and grateful someone has brought this to our/my attention. I can almost not breathe. I do not know what to do or say except I am ready to educate and do whatever is necessary to participate in ending this brutality. This makes me so sad.

Get rid of the President of China.

How is it possible we are all doing nothing about this? Signing petitions while so many are dying and being tortured. The President of the USA is concerned about Iraq while this is direct torture in front of us. We should be demanding this as a political platform and know exactly what the candidates are facturally going to do about this within 10 days of taking office? Why have not celebrities such as Letterman and Oprah challenged our polititians publicly. Why has Oprah or someone who China would have to acknowledge taken action? If I had the money to fly to China and free these people I could single handedly do it myself. This is America’s first humane cause to defend in decades and we have done nothing.
